EMPOWERING SENIORS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
SIGA - Seniors in Green Action is an Erasmus+ project that promotes environmental awareness, lifelong learning, and well-being among older adults. Through an innovative educational programme, SIGA equips seniors (54+) with the knowledge and skills to responsibly collect and use medicinal wild plants, ensuring environmental preservation while promoting natural health practices.
By engaging in hands-on learning experiences, seniors not only gain valuable skills but also actively contribute to their communities, fostering social inclusion and intergenerational knowledge exchange. The project empowers them to embrace sustainable living, reduce reliance on industrial pharmaceuticals, and enhance their quality of life through a closer connection with nature.
The SIGA project aims to create lasting positive change by:
- Enhancing seniors' environmental awareness – educating participants on the importance of preserving wild plant habitats and sustainable foraging practices.
- Promoting active and healthy ageing - encouraging seniors to engage in outdoor activities that improve mental and physical well-being.
- Fostering social inclusion – creating opportunities for seniors to participate in community-based learning and knowledge exchange.
- Encouraging sustainable health practices – reducing reliance on synthetic medicines by teaching natural preparation methods.
- Developing green skills – cultivating awareness and practical skills for sustainability and responsible resource use.
- Creating accessible learning opportunities – ensuring all project materials are available digitally for continuous learning and wider outreach.

All project partners successfully piloted the developed Home Herbal Pharmacy program. All participants in all partner countries expressed their satisfaction with the developed program. Participants underwent theoretical, field and practical classes, and enjoyed socializing and making new friends during that time.
All participants emphasized that participating in the pilot program was very useful to them. They acquired new knowledge and skills that they can now apply independently. They were especially excited about the fact that they could immediately try them out in practice. Participants had the opportunity to learn about wild medicinal plants, the protection of their natural habitats, the environment in general and how to make their own herbal preparations from harvested plants.
Our pilot program participants expressed their satisfaction with the practical applicability of everything they have learned, and some even expressed a desire to learn even more about this subject. This shows how much the topic intrigued them and how valuable this learning experience was to them. Learners praised pleasant atmosphere and interactivity in the lectures, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.
We can proudly say that the pilot program was a complete success – the participants left richer in knowledge, skills and increased environmental awareness, satisfied with the time they spent learning, socializing and acquiring practical knowledge that will help them lead a healthier and happier life.
